Free retreat for cancer survivors accepting registration

OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — Survivor’s Outdoor Experience is accepting registration for its free Healing Adventure for cancer survivors at the Olympic NatureBridge Campus from May 18 to 20.

Space is limited, and participants can reserve space now at www.survivors outdoorexperience.org.

In its seventh year, the retreat was created as a family and friends program, said Jack Ganster, founder and executive director of the nonprofit Survivor’s Outdoor Experience.

Participants will include individuals that have been diagnosed with cancer and a companion if they choose to be accompanied.

Ganster, a mountaineer and survivor of brain cancer, said the program is designed to allow those diagnosed with cancer a restful weekend where they can learn through expert presentations different methods for surviving with cancer.

“The format of events encourages a group dynamic which is informative, supportive, enjoyable, and perhaps a bit adventurous,” Ganster said. “The retreat is designed to be a healing experience for all.”

Presentations and activities will include:

• “Who is a Survivor?” by Ganster.

• Healing in Harmony with Teri Applegate.

• “From Surviving to Thriving” by Dr. Heath Foxlee.

• “Now What? Navigating Forward” by Dr. Lynne Taylor.

• Healthy cooking with Chef Dave Long.

• “The Companion’s Story” with Tess Taft.

• Exercise is Good Medicine.

• Relating to Nature.

• Hiking and canoeing with NatureBridge staff.

Gay Hunter, Survivor’s Outdoor Experience secretary said that she has attended past retreats.

“Each year it has thrilled and amazed me to witness the inspiration that participants and presenters bring to the group,” she said. “I look forward to another rewarding retreat this year.”

Survivor’s Outdoor Experience is a nonprofit educational and recreational organization. This program was developed to provide cancer survivors of all ages an opportunity to learn about the benefits of living a healthy and active lifestyle. The goal is to assist participants in gaining strength, hope, and a sense of the future.
