Free talk about 1889-90 exploration of the Olympics is set for Tuesday

PORT ANGELES — “The Press Expedition’s Journey through The Olympics and Its Legacy” will be discussed by Olympic National Park ranger Jon Preston from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 12).

The free talk will be held at the park’s Visitor Center, 3002 Mount Angeles Road.

The 1889-90 Press Expedition was commissioned by the Seattle Press newspaper to unveil “the mystery which wraps the land encircled by the snow capped Olympic range.”

The Olympic Mountains were then unmapped territory.

The expedition had five “intrepid explorers” whom the Press described as having “an abundance of grit and manly vim,” plus four dogs, two mules and 1,500 pounds of supplies.
