General election ballots mailed

Voters have until 8 p.m. on Nov. 7

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Clallam County ballot lists contenders for two positions in elections that are functionally unopposed. Contenders dropped out but their names were not removed from the ballot. This story has been corrected to reflect that.

PORT ANGELES — The general election season gets underway this week with the mailing of ballots in both Clallam and Jefferson counties.

Clallam County mailed 57,000 ballots Tuesday to all active registered voters in the county. The general election is Nov. 7.

Qualified new voters have until Oct. 30 to register either online or by mail, or they have until 8 p.m. Nov. 7 to register in person at the Elections and Voter Registration Office in the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St. in Port Angeles.

Registered voters may access their registration details and other voter information online at www.votewa.gov. Those needing a replacement ballot may also access a printable ballot via the secure website, or obtain one by contacting Clallam County Elections and Voter Registration at 360-417-2221 or elections@clallamcountywa.gov.

Ballots must be postmarked or returned to an official Clallam County ballot dropbox by 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Jefferson County

Jefferson County will mail an estimated 27,665 ballots Wednesday to all qualified voters in the county.

People can register to vote online or by mail until eight days before an election or in-person through Election Day. Registrations done by mail need to be received, not postmarked, by the eight-day deadline.

Jefferson County offers three ways to register: online voter registration (https://co.jefferson.wa.us/1272/6404/Voter-Resources); printing a registration form and mailing it to Jefferson County Auditor, P.O. Box 563, Port Townsend, WA 98368; or in person at 1820 Jefferson St. in Port Townsend between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Contested races

The Clallam County ballot features a number of contested races.

Two are on the ballot as contested but actually are not.

In Clallam County Commissioner District No. 1 (Sequim, four-year term), incumbent Mark Ozias (prefers Democrat) is being challenged by Stan McClain (prefers Republican). McClain has withdrawn from the race, but did so too late to have his name removed from the ballot.

In the Sequim School District Director at large Position No. 5 race (four-year term), incumbent Michael Rocha running. The ballot lists Sandra Kellso as a challenger but she has withdrawn from the race.

Actual contested races are:

In the Port of Port Angeles Commissioner District No. 3 (four-year term), incumbent Connie Beauvais is being challenged by Lee Whetham.

In Hospital District No. 1 (Forks) Commissioner Position No. 4 (six-year term), incumbent Sandy Schier is being challenged by Amy Kitchel Ruble.

In the Port Angeles City Council Position No. 5 race (four-year term), incumbent Amy Miller is being challenged by Jim Haguewood.

In the Port Angeles City Council Position No. 6 race (four-year term), incumbent Navarra Carr is being challenged by Mark Karjalainen.

In the Port Angeles City Council Position No. 7 race (four-year term), incumbent Brendan Meyer is being challenged by Kalli Mae Jones.

In the Sequim City Council Position No. 1 race (four-year term), incumbent William Armacost is being challenged by Kathy Downer, who currently holds Position No. 2.

In the Sequim City Council Position No. 2 race (four-year term), Jim Black is facing off against Dan Butler.

In the Sequim City Council Position 6 race (four-year term), Harmony Rutter is facing off against Patrick Day.

In the Sequim School District Director District No. 1 race (four-year term), incumbent Larry Jeffryes is being challenged by John Graham.

In the Sequim School District Director at large Position No. 4 race (two-year unexpired term), incumbent Maren Halvorsen is being challenged by Derek Huntington.

In the Cape Flattery School District Director District No. 2 race (four-year term), incumbent Don Baker is being challenged by Cathy Walde.

In the Clallam County Park and Recreation District No. 1 Commissioner Position No. 3 (four-year short and full term), Jason Bushman, Robert Kellso and Dick Neal all are seeking the seat.

In Clallam County, numerous candidates appear on the ballot unopposed:

John Lewis is running for Sunland Water District Commissioner Position No. 2 (six-year term).

Andy Brett is running for Black Diamond Water District Commissioner Position No. 1 (six-year term).

Gordon Gibbs is running for Quillayute Valley Park and Recreation District Commissioner Position No. 5 (four-year term).

Nedra Reed is running for Quillayute Valley Park and Recreation District Commissioner Position No. 4 (four-year term).

David Gedlund is running for Quillayute Valley Park and Recreation District Commissioner Position No. 3 (four-year term).

Susie Brandelius is running for Quillayute Valley Park and Recreation District Commissioner Position No. 2 (two-year unexpired term).

Jean Monro is running for Clallam County Park and Recreation District No. 1 Commissioner Position No. 5 (four-year term).

Al Mundy is running for Clallam County Park and Recreation District No. 1 Commissioner Position No. 4.

Scott Horton is running for Fire District 6 (Forks) Commissioner Position No. 1.

Tony Pendleton is running for Fire District 5 (Clallam Bay) Commissioner Position No. 1 (six-year short and full term).

Dan Peacock is running for Fire District 4 (Joyce) Commissioner Position No. 4 (four-year unexpired term).

Bruce Leiper is running for Fire District 4 (Joyce) Commissioner Position No. 2 (six-year short and full term).

Marcus (Ben) Pacheco is running for Fire District 4 (Joyce) Commissioner Position No. 1 (six-year term).

Mike Mingee is running for Fire District 3 (Sequim) Commissioner Position No. 2 (six-year short and full term).

Dan Huff is running for Fire District 2 (Port Angeles) Commissioner Position No. 1 (six-year short and full term).

Chet Hunt is running for Fire District 1 (Forks) Commissioner Position No. 2 (six-year term).

Dustin Kraft is running for Fire District 1 (Forks) Commissioner Position No. 1 (six-year term).

Michael A. Reaves is running for Quillayute Valley School District Director District No. 5 (four-year term).

William H. Rohde is running for Quillayute Valley School District Director District No. 3 (four-year term).

Leanne Ellis is running for Cape Flattery School District Director District No. 5 (four-year term).

Chuck Carlson is running for Hospital District 1 (Forks) Commissioner Position No. 2.

Jefferson County

In Jefferson County, the ballot also features a number of contested races and one ballot issue:

The Port Townsend Transportation Benefit District is putting a three-tenths of 1 percent retail sales tax before voters. It would last 10 years and would pay for or finance transportation improvement projects within the district boundaries.

In the Port of Port Townsend Commissioner District No. 1 race (four-year term), incumbent Pam Petranek faces challenger Chuck Fauls.

In the Queets-Clearwater School District Director Position No. 5 race (two-year unexpired term), incumbent Rosemary Jackson faces challenger Sarah Charles.

In the Quilcene School District Director District No. 1 race (four-year term), Ron Frantz will face off against Ronald Leon Jones.

In the Quilcene School District Director District No. 4 race (four-year term), Anne Bessey will face off against James Hodgson.

In the Port Townsend School District Director District No. 2 race (four-year term), incumbent Simon Little is being challenged by Annie Bartos.

In the Port Townsend School District Director District No. 3 race (four-year term), Matt Klontz will face off against Nancy Papasodora.

In the Port Townsend School District Director No. 5 race (four-year term), incumbent Nathaneal L. O’Hara will face challenger Timothy S. Hawley.

In the Sequim School District Director District No. 1 race (four-year term), incumbent Larry Jeffryes will face off against challenger John Graham.

In the Sequim School District Director at large District No. 4 race (two-year unexpired term), incumbent Maren Halvorsen will face off against challenger Derek Huntington.

In the Sequim School District Director at large District No. 5 race (four-year term), incumbent Michael Rocha will face off against challenger Sandra Kellso.
