Gingerbread houses on display in Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — The last of 10 entries into the Port Townsend annual Gingerbread House Contest are now on display, with judging for the best gingerbread creation set next Saturday.

The gingerbread houses are on display at Flagship Landing, 1007 Water St., this year rather than at the traditional Aldrich’s Market location.

However, the contest is expected to be back at Aldrich’s next year.

“We are grateful to the management of Flagship Landing for offering the space,” said Mari Mullen of the Port Townsend Main Street Program, which took over the contest this year.

“We’re inviting the public to come view the gingerbread creations,” she added.

“We have been impressed by the creativity of the entries.”

Some of the entries are simple kit houses, decorated with simple white frosting and tiny round candies.

Others are a little more ambitious. One, named the Merry (Christmas)-go-round, is a carousel complete with tiny gingerbread horses, a moving platform, music and lights.

The gingerbread creations will be on display until Jan. 14, though they will be judged at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Winners will be named in three categories: child 12 and under, children’s group, which has to be made up of kids 12 or younger; and the 12 and over category which allowed groups and individuals to participate.

Winners will receive prizes donated by local businesses including Elevated Ice Cream and Candy Company, Whistle Stop Toys and the Rose Theater.

Less than a month before the Gingerbread contest, Aldrich’s announced it close its doors for good but since then, Aldrich’s Market owner Milton Fukuda has confirmed he is in talks with an unidentified buyer.

For now, the Main Street Program’s executive director says she is grateful to those business owners who made sure the contest would continue.

The Main Street Program has been accepting entries since Dec. 16. The deadline for entries was Friday.

Originally designated TP-133, it is currently named Island Champion after going through several owners since the army sold it in 1947. It is now owned by Debbie Wright of Everett, who uses it as a liveaboard.
