Golf tourney highlights Port Ludlow Days

PORT LUDLOW — The first Port Ludlow International Open Championship of Golf tournament highlights this year’s Port Ludlow Days celebration, which runs from Tuesday through Saturday and features food, entertainment and recreation.

“We are expecting a crowd,” said Neil Robinson, who along with his wife, Lia, is helping Doug and Linda Henderson organize a much-expanded event after a sabbatical in 2008 because “nobody stepped up” to help.

Port Ludlow Village Council sponsors Port Ludlow Days.

Port Ludlow Days drew about 2,000 people in 2007.

The golf tournament at Port Ludlow Golf Club, 751 Highland Drive, is sponsored by American Marine Bank.

The tournament includes a chipping contest.

“It’s going to be a money-maker for both Port Ludlow Village Council and the golf course,” Neil Robinson said of the new tourney, which had more than 70 entries by Friday, the entry deadline.

Entry fees are $60 for non-members and $12 for members, and the first prize is a trip for two to Pebble Beach, Calif.

Other events scheduled:

• Port Ludlow Yacht Club will host twilight sailings aboard several boats from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at no cost.

• A 5-mile “Poker Hike” is set for 9 a.m. Wednesday, and a 2.5-mile “Raffle Hike” is planned at 9 a.m. Thursday on Port Ludlow’s 14 miles of community trails.

• At 7 p.m. Thursday will be “Hot August Night,” sponsored by Kitsap Bank at the Bay Club, featuring singing groups from Port Ludlow, including The Hot Flashes and the Firemen, The Choral Belles and The Sounders. Port Angeles musician Charlie Ferries performs at noon Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

• The Friday Market, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., will offer fresh produce, flowers and arts and crafts sold by at least 25 vendors.

• On Saturday will be “Vendor Days,” which will have more than 60 booths for arts, crafts and foods from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• The 87-foot Coast Guard cutter Tarpon will visit Saturday. It will tie up at Port Ludlow Marina.

• A hula dancing troupe, choreographed by Bernie Robinson, will perform from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The new Port Ludlow Fire District fire truck will be on display, while the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will be on hand to fingerprint children.

• Food will be prepared by Chef Dan from the Inn at Port Ludlow, and musical groups will entertain. In the beer garden, beer and brauts will be sold among the food vendors in parking lots fronting the marina.

• Children will be able to tie fishing flies with the Fly Fishers of Port Ludlow and test-cast them in Port Ludlow’s lagoon.

• A quilt with a nautical theme will be displayed Saturday night and raffled off Sunday.

• Raffle tickets will be sold to benefit Center Valley Animal Rescue in Quilcene.

• The Rakers antique car club and the Porsche and Corvette clubs will exhibit cars from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
