PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Commissioner Mike Chapman, the only one of three commissioners with an “R” after his name, may seek re-election with an “I.”
Although he continues to call himself a Republican, the county GOP Executive Committee has stripped him of party support — both moral and monetary.
That leaves Chapman to consider running for a third four-year term this fall as an independent candidate.
“I’m still Republican today,” he told the Peninsula Daily News on Friday, adding he had not made up his mind — and might not until someone runs under the GOP banner.
However, he said, “the idea of running as an independent is attractive.
“The issues that we deal with at the county are not Republican or Democrat.
“I leave partisanship at the courthouse steps.”
