Inslee: Moment of silence on Saturday for slide victims

OLYMPIA — Gov. Jay Inslee is calling for a moment of silence this weekend to honor the victims of the deadly mudslide in Oso.

Inslee on Friday asked state residents to pause at 10:37 a.m. Saturday.

The huge slide that destroyed the community north of Seattle struck at that time on March 22. He urged people to “join together and silently send our thoughts and prayers to the families of Oso.”

On Friday morning, federal officials approved Inslee’s request for more federal assistance to help with mudslide recovery efforts, including helping local and state government agencies recover a portion of the estimated $4.5 million expected to be spent on emergency response, protective measures and debris removal.

Inslee OKs gun-surrender bill

OLYMPIA — Gov. Jay Inslee has signed a measure to allow a person under a restraining order for domestic violence to be ordered to surrender all firearms.

Inslee signed House Bill 1840 on Friday, and it takes effect Dec. 1.

The bill that allows the subject of such a restraining order to be required give up his or her guns after a hearing if a judge rules that person is a credible threat.

Inslee signs bill designating official oyster

OLYMPIA — The Olympia oyster is now the official oyster of Washington state.

Gov. Jay Inslee signed Senate Bill 6145 on Friday, and it officially takes effect in mid-June.

The ostrea lurida, commonly known as the Olympia oyster, is the only oyster native to Washington state.

Olympia oysters are small, flat oysters that are found in low tide areas, mudflats and gravel bars in estuaries and bays.
