CARLSBORG — A quick-moving grass fire sparked when a lawn mower blade hit a rock charred about 4 acres near homes south of Spath Road early Friday afternoon.
No structures were burned, and no injuries resulted from the blaze near Owl Creek Lane.
About 15 Clallam County Fire District 3 firefighters doused and controlled the flames in about 45 minutes, with mop-up taking about an hour.
The fire broke out at about noon Friday and quickly spread in a field of dry, brittle grass.
“I would say that it’s probably the biggest one so far this year,” Kettel said of the grass fire.
The blaze was a strong reminder that dry weather and heat have resulted in dangerous fire conditions.
“He was trying to prevent a fire by mowing it,” Capt. Dennis Kettel said of the homeowner.
“People just don’t really know how dry it’s getting,” Kettel said. “Even the smallest spark can cause a fire.”
That’s why a fire burn ban is in effect until Oct. 1, he added.
