Habitat to dedicate first house in new Port Angeles development

PORT ANGELES — Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County will dedicate the first house at its new Maloney Heights development in west Port Angeles on Sunday.

The dedication will be at 3 p.m.

The public is invited to welcome the Delta and Jarrett Shore family into their new home, said Maitland Peet, executive director.

The house was built largely with a grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, complemented by local volunteers logging 3,521 hours of construction to date, Peet said in a statement.

The Shore family has expended 475 hours of effort on the home as well.

The grant is part of a $10.4 million nationwide financial commitment for 2011 called “Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity” to help construct new, affordable housing for families in need.

The funding is making the construction of 164 additional homes in 33 states possible.

Maloney Heights is a 15-lot subdivision being developed through a partnership with the local Habitat affiliate, Serenity House and the city of Port Angeles.

Serenity House, also a low-income housing provider, has already completed a 28-unit apartment complex for the chronically homeless on the site.

The other 14 lots are Habitat home sites.

Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County builds modest affordable housing for qualifying working families who are living in substandard housing.

“The organization seeks to eliminate poverty housing in Clallam County to ensure that all have a decent place to live and raise their children, and to make affordable housing a matter of conscience for everyone in the area.” Peet said in the statement.

To get to the Port Angeles site, take West 18th Street to N Street, take a right on N to West 16th Street, then a left on West 16th Street to Maloney Court, and another left to the home.

For more information or to become a volunteer, phone the Habitat for Humanity affiliate office at 360-681-6780.
