PORT ANGELES — Harbinger Winery of Port Angeles recently was awarded a gold medal at the 2013 Sunset International Wine Competition and took Best of Class for its 2009 El Jefe wine.
The El Jefe is a reserve red wine blend made out of Rhone-style grapes.
This is the second straight year Harbinger has been awarded gold medals at this event.
Last year, the 2008 El Jefe and 2008 Barbera both took gold medals.
Almost 3,000 wineries from around the world entered this year’s competition, which is sponsored by Sunset magazine
Excited about the gold medal, owner/winemaker Sara Gagnon said:
“We were going to wait until summer to put it on the shelves, but in light of its recent accomplishments, it seems that the El Jefe is ready for its debut [and will be released early],” Gagnon said.
Also taking awards at the Sunset competition were Harbinger’s 2010 Malbec (silver) and the 2009 Barbera (bronze).
The wines will be featured in the October issue of Sunset magazine.
Harbinger’s 2010 Malbec also received a gold medal at the Great Northwest Wine Competition.
