Harbor-Works board has vacancy; Port of Port Angeles accepts applications

PORT ANGELES — The Port of Port Angeles is accepting applications for community members who would like to replace Bart Irwin on the Port Angeles Harbor-Works Development Authority board.

Irwin’s letter of resignation was formally announced at the port commissioners’ Monday meeting.

Irwin, a retired lawyer, said that he always plans a trip to Texas — or another warmer climate — in the months of February through April.

“Because of that, I won’t be in the community during that time,” Irwin said.

“Also during that time, the board is going to be faced with some very important decisions.

“It’s like they say, timing is everything. It just doesn’t work for me to be part of the board if I’m missing those important months.”

End of the year

His resignation is effective Dec. 31 or when a new appointee is named — whichever comes first, Irwin said.

“It’s a pretty simple story,” Irwin said.

“I’m not disgruntled or anything — timing didn’t work out.

“Also, many of my skills I felt were more important as we were forming the organization and now they are less in demand, so I feel confident handing the position on to someone new.”

The city created Harbor-Works, with support from the Port of Port Angeles, to acquire Rayonier Inc.’s vacant pulp mill site on the Port Angeles waterfront, direct its redevelopment and assist in its environmental cleanup.

As part of the agreement with the city, the port nominates two of the board members and the City Council finalizes the decision.

The port commissioners asked Executive Director Jeff Robb to draft a letter of appreciation to Irwin for his work on the board.

Letter of interest

Those interested in the position should mail a letter of interest and a list of qualifications to Holly Hairell, human resources manager, P.O. Box 1350, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

“All of them should be in before the first of the year, so the commissioners, hopefully, can approve them by the end of January,” Robb said.

One of the city’s appointees, Karen McCormick, also stepped down this year and was replaced by former Mayor Jim Hallett in October.
