PORT ANGELES — Authorities are investigating the cause of a Friday night crash that killed the 20-year-old driver of an all-terrain vehicle and seriously injured his teen-age passenger.
Mathew S. Edwards of Port Angeles was found dead Saturday morning, hours after his four-wheel all-terrain vehicle apparently went over a steep embankment below Little River Road and hit a tree.
His passenger, 16-year-old Tamra L. Swisher of Port Angeles, was thrown from the vehicle and spent the night in the woods.
Rescuers found her unconscious, but breathing, at about 6 a.m. Saturday, Clallam County Sheriff’s Deputy Dave Ellefson said.
Swisher was initially taken to Olympic Medical Center and then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where she was listed in serious condition with head injuries.
Edwards and Swisher were both wearing helmets at the time of the crash, Ellefson said.
