High school poetry sought for annual Port Angeles slam; deadline for entries is March 25

PORT ANGELES — High school poetry will be celebrated at an April 10 Poetry Slam, and entries are being accepted now.

The Port Angeles Library is accepting entries for the 2014 High School Poetry Slam until 5 p.m. March 25.

“The annual poetry slam is a really popular event that gives kids an opportunity to engage with poetry in an exciting and fulfilling way,” said Jennifer Knight, youth services librarian.

Teen poets sought

Any student in ninth through 12th grade can enter up to three poems and be eligible for prizes consisting of a tablet, an iPod Shuffle and $50 in gift certificates to local bookstores.

Poems must be the student’s original work. The total length of all poems submitted cannot exceed 60 lines.

Entry forms can be obtained on the North Olympic Library System website at www.nols.org; from Susan MacDonald, Port Angeles High School librarian; or from Knight.

To be considered for prizes, entrants must perform their poetry for the judges at the poetry slam at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

Poems can be read or recited from memory.

Poetry Month

The poetry slam is in celebration of National Poetry Month. It is supported by the Port Angeles Friends of the Library.

The contest will be judged by volunteers Diane Urbani de la Paz, Peninsula Daily News features editor, and Michael Mills, Tidepools adviser and English instructor at Peninsula College.
