For many, having fun over the Memorial Day weekend includes packing up the car, gassing up and hitting the road.
And as the summer driving season begins, that simple start to the holiday will cost more than ever
Prices in Forks already had exceeded $4 a gallon Thursday, as they had at the Joyce General Store, where a gallon of unleaded regular gas cost $4.16.
Is it likely to drop?
“I haven’t seen anything going down,” said Jeremy Reeves, a clerk at the landmark mercantile.
Meanwhile, the average price of diesel is an eye- popping $4.89 a gallon at many Peninsula locations.
As of Thursday, the statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $3.92.
Eight states had a higher average price, including Alaska, where regular fuel has topped $4.20 a gallon.
That created a foreshortened nostalgia for Memorial Day weekend 2007.
The average price on the North Olympic Peninsula then was $3.37 a gallon, up 25 cents from a month earlier.
