OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — A 15-year-old hiker was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Monday after she fell from a 15-foot cliff in Olympic National Park.
The hiker, an Idaho student visiting the park as part of a school field trip, reportedly fell head-first from the cliff onto a beach near the Hoh River.
She was in and out of consciousness, authorities said.
The girl was not identified because of her age, said Petty Officer Katelyn Tyson, spokeswoman for the Coast Guard.
She was reported to be in stable condition, Tyson said.
Olympic National Park officials contacted the Coast Guard for the hiker to be airlifted from the park, she said.
An HH-65 Dolphin crew from Coast Guard Air Station/Sector Field Office Port Angeles was dispatched to the scene at about 10:45 a.m. and lowered a rescue swimmer when it arrived, Tyson said.
The girl was hoisted aboard the helicopter at approximately 1:12 p.m. and flown to Seattle for treatment.
No further details were available Monday afternoon from Olympic National Park or Harborview Medical Center.
