PORT TOWNSEND — The Jefferson County Historical Society plans to front a majority of the $7.3 million for the proposed City Hall restoration and annex construction.
Early estimates put the society’s contribution in the range of $5.1 million, Director Bill Tennent said Tuesday.
“We’re willing to help the city in any way we can to help raise money to restore this building,” he said.
The money will be used for seismic upgrades, building improvements and the most dramatic change of all — the return of the 110-year-old building’s third floor.
The society uses the historic City Hall building at 540 Water St. as its office and for its museum.
The nonprofit status of the society gives it an edge over the city for fund raising, society board President Barbara Marseille said Tuesday.
