The Hoh tribe has purchased a fiberglass canoe that will help promote drug and alcohol prevention through events such as next year’s Paddle Journey.
The canoe was purchased with money from a Drug and Alcohol Substance Abuse Prevention grant in September.
“Having the canoe will promote sobriety and recovery,” said Willie Koch, director of the Hoh drug and alcohol program.
“It will also help the tribe connect with ancestral ways.”
Traditionally, tribal members who participate in a paddle journey must be clean and sober.
Life jackets, new paddles and a global positioning system were also purchased.
Koch would not disclose how much the canoe and other items cost.
