SHINE — The Hood Canal Bridge will close to vehicles several times between 12:01 a.m. and 4 a.m. this coming Friday; Saturday; Monday, June 5; and Tuesday, June 6, during work on the drawspan.
Each closure will last about one hour, during which time crews working for the state Department of Transportation will replace mechanical components of the drawspan in a $5.2 million project awarded to Northbank Civil and Marine Inc. in October.
To help traffic move through the area, the bridge will reopen to traffic for at least 30 minutes between closures.
The lower and upper gear boxes are worn and near the end of their lifespan, Transportation said.
Crews will replace the gear boxes and hydraulic hoses and adjust and align the guide rollers that are responsible for operating the drawspan for marine traffic.
The first part of the work was done at the end of March. More bridge closures will occur throughout the summer as the work continues, and they will be announced as they are scheduled, Transportation said.
The overall project, which will be completed this fall, requires up to 12 long-term overnight closures between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., and a maximum of 20 short-term closures of up to an hour each between midnight and 4 a.m., according to Cara Mitchell, state Department of Transportation spokeswoman.
