CHIMACUM — Preparations for renovation of the Hood Canal Bridge are coming together.
Repair work will begin later this year, and the plan for the replacement of the eastern half of the bridge in 2006 is “pretty much intact” and is being reviewed at the state Department of Transportation’s Port Orchard office, says Project Manager John Callahan.
Callahan and two other state Transportation officials addressed the Peninsula Regional Transportation Planning Organization at their meeting Friday in Chimacum.
An economic slump is going to make competition between contractors fierce as they bid on the Hood Canal project, Callahan said.
“Specialty contractors are hungry,” he said.
Transportation officials are expecting at least six bidders on the project.
That’s good news for the state and taxpayers, according to Callahan.
