FORKS — For Forks High School senior Mayra Rodriguez, and for this city of 3,200, this fall is a time of fear mixed with hope.
Rodriguez, 17, is the associated student body president of Forks High School.
She believes she is in a position to move her community forward.
Rodriguez, who’s lived in Forks since elementary school, is the first Hispanic to be student body president, according to guidance counselor Steven Erickson.
The kids cheered when her name was announced, Erickson added.
What will Rodriguez do this year?
“I want to unite the school,” she said, with not a split-second’s hesitation.
The Hispanic kids — 17.7 percent of Forks High’s student body — “stick to themselves too much.”
Inspired by a summer student-government camp at Mount Rainier, Rodriguez plans to bring people together by looking for interests they share — music, movies, all the stuff American teenagers devour.
