PORT ANGELES – A 46-year-old Forks man was found dead in his cell at the Clallam County jail on Wednesday afternoon after he apparently strangled himself with a bedsheet.
John Francis Young – who had been in jail since May 2006 awaiting trial – was found by jail personnel inside his locked cell at about 3:45 p.m. during a regular welfare check, according to a written statement from the Clallam County Sheriff’s Department.
A bedsheet hanging from underneath the bunk, which was about 18 inches from the floor, was found around his neck, said Clallam County Chief Criminal Deputy Ron Cameron.
Dr. Peter Erickson, the jail’s doctor, and Port Angeles Fire Department paramedics attempted unsuccessfully to revive Young, said the written statement.
Preliminary findings in the sheriff’s investigation are that Young killed himself, said the statement.
