PORT TOWNSEND — An interim Jefferson County administrator could start work a week from today after the county commissioners voiced support Monday for contracting with the upbeat, affable former Gig Harbor police chief.
Saying he was strong on personnel matters, Dennis Richards told the commissioners that he was the kind of administrator who likes to buy a box of doughnuts and visit a department to chat with employees face to face.
After three hours of interviewing three candidates Monday afternoon, Greg Prothman, a government administrator recruiter contracted by the county for up to $30,000, said he would draw up a contract for Richards, Gig Harbor police chief in 1987-1995, who would technically be an employee of Heathman’s firm until a permanent administrator was hired and situated.
The interim contract could be presented to the commissioners as early as Wednesday or Thursday, he said.
