IRONDALE – With the ink still wet on the amended no-shooting zone ordinance the three Jefferson County commissioners adopted on Friday, a proposal has been submitted to establish a no-shooting zone in Irondale.
David Tonkin of Irondale turned in to county commissioners this week a petition with 100 signatures that requests a no-shooting zone be formed in a wooded area near his neighborhood.
Tonkin said that residential development is rapidly popping up in Irondale, and shooting is no longer safe.
“We want to take care of the problem before someone gets injured or killed,” Tonkin said Tuesday.
The boundaries of the proposed zone stretch from Prospect Avenue on the north to Irondale Road on the south, and east of Rhody Drive to Port Townsend Bay.
Firing a gun in a no-shooting zone is a misdemeanor offense, punishable by a fine of up to $100 for the first offense and up to $250 for consecutive offenses.
