Heading back to school can be an exciting time for children, but it can be costly for parents.
Peninsula parents say they’ll spend up to $500 per child getting their youngsters ready for school this fall.
Just for school supplies, parents say, they will spend about $25 per child. If a backpack and calculator are needed, “just the basics’ can cost between $60 and $200.
“Usually we end up spending between $50 or $60 on each child, not including backpacks,” said Taressa Mair, whose two sons attend Crescent High School in Joyce. “We usually just get the basics until after the first day of school so the teachers can tell us what to buy.”
For most Peninsula students, the first day of school is Wednesday.
