PORT ANGELES — The City Council formally accepted Mark Madsen’s July 9 resignation on a 5-2 vote at Tuesday’s special council meeting.
Veteran council members Larry Williams and Karen Rogers voted against accepting it.
Before the vote, Rogers asked if the motion included issues of severance or if it was just the resignation.
City Attorney Bill Bloor said that accepting the resignation as it stood would mean that the severance provided would be that which was outlined in Madsen’s employment contract.
Even though he voluntarily resigned, his contract guarantees Madsen at least $37,000 in severance.
Madsen’s annual salary was $148,000. His resignation is effective Sept. 1.
Rogers said she voted against against accepting Madsen’s resignation because she felt his contract didn’t outline severance clearly enough.
“I don’t believe it is clear enough on severance,” Rogers said.
“I also voted against it because the motion didn’t address the future transition plan.”
