JAMESTOWN — Gusting winds and swells along the Strait of Juan de Fuca reduced to two the number of canoes taking part in the Port Townsend-Jamestown leg of the Paddle Journey.
Ten other canoes were brought to Jamestown on trailers in preparation for today’s Jamestown-Port Angeles leg of the journey of tribal canoes.
Paddle Journey participants said following a skippers’ meeting Tuesday night that canoes will depart Jamestown for Port Angeles today between 9 a.m. and 9:15 a.m.
Arrival at Hollywood Beach, hosted by the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe, is expected around 1 p.m.
The number of canoes depends on weather conditions because some crews are more experienced than others, one of the pullers said.
The canoes left Suquamish, near Poulsbo on Puget Sound, on Saturday. Their adventure will end Aug. 10 when they reach Taholah on the Pacific coast.
