SHINE — More than 55 gallons of diesel fuel was spilled on state Highway 104 late Wednesday night, prompting the closure of the road for more than two hours.
A motorist reported the slick a mile east of Center Road around 9:15 p.m., Washington State Patrol Sgt. Ken Przygocki said.
When authorities arrived, a circle of brush eight feet wide alongside the road was ablaze, he said.
Jefferson County Fire District No. 2 (Quilcene) responded to the fire and spill.
State Department of Transportation and Department of Ecology officials were also dispatched to the scene.
Two more fuel fires were subsequently reported on Center Road just before 10 p.m., one north and one south of the highway, the State Patrol reported.
