Some candidates scurried about Saturday ringing doorbells, shaking hands and passing out literature in the waning hours of the general election campaign season.
Voters’ telephones were ringing off the hook as Democratic and Republican campaign workers called them at home to remind them to vote Tuesday, Election Day.
In Jefferson County, where voters cast ballots at the polls as well as by mail, 5,979 absentee ballots — 53.5 percent of the 11,162 issued — had been returned at the end of last week.
