A citizens committee tackling the problem of seawater intrusion into private water wells in Jefferson County is suggesting that no new wells be drilled within one-quarter mile of shorelines.
The Seawater Intrusion Focus Group recently completed a report that recommends limiting construction of new wells to protect groundwater supplies.
The county must have standards in place to protect against salt intrusion — a long-standing problem in some shoreline areas — by August, according to a ruling in January by the Western Washington Growth Management Hearings Board.
The nine-member citizens committee was formed last month.
Committee members will present their report to county commissioners at 10 a.m. today at the County Courthouse.
