Jefferson Community School receives large grant

PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson Community School has received a $90,000 grant from an anonymous source — the single largest grant in the school’s history.

The grant to the private school was announced at an Evening of Gratitude honoring many of the school’s supporters Friday, according to a news release.

“The grant comes at a crucial time for the school. Enrollment has declined this year from a high of 34 students in 2016 to 17,” said Board President Nat Jacob.

“We’re not yet out of the weeds, but this gift has given us a great foundation for marketing the school and building our fundraising capacity.”

The grant will be used in marketing the school and expanding its reach.

“Currently, we serve grades seven through 12,” said Head of School Rita Hemsley in a statement. “This grant will allow us to grow all these initiatives and more.”

JCS has already received $45,000. The remaining $45,000 from the grant must be matched by donors from the community.

“This grant has given us an incredible opportunity,” Jacob said.

“Our deadline is April 28 when the school will host its annual Spring Event. We are ramping up an effort to meet the challenge by reaching out to past supporters and welcoming new ones.”
