PORT TOWNSEND — A 5-year-old boy who suffered massive head injuries in a Saturday bicycle crash has been upgraded at a Seattle hospital and appears to have no serious brain injury.
The boy, whose name has not been released, was conscious and in stable condition Sunday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Jefferson County Fire District No. 1 spokeswoman Denise Manly said.
Doctors have found no serious brain or spinal injuries or broken bones, “just a really bad concussion,”‘ Manly said.
“They’re basically now just going to observe him for the next couple days,” she said.
The boy was riding his sister’s bike Saturday in the Adelma Beach area of Cape George when he attempted a 90-degree turn and, unfamiliar with the bike’s hand brakes, could not stop and crashed, Manly said.
The impact threw the boy over a 15- to 20-foot embankment and he landed on his head, she said.
He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center.
