PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County commissioners unanimously agreed Monday to donate $5,000 toward an effort aimed at keeping Fort Worden State Park free of parking fees.
Glen Huntingford, R-Chimacum, made the motion for the donation Monday after talking to three county Lodging Tax Advisory Committee members.
“They were supportive and felt it was an appropriate use of funds,” Huntingford said, noting the funds would come from lodging-tax coffers.
Lodging taxes are collected from visitors staying overnight in area hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and other accommodations.
The contribution means Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce has raised more than $22,000 of the $25,000 needed to keep parking free at the park.
The agency has until Jan. 31 to raise the remainder or Fort Worden will start charging visitors $5 per day to park.
