PORT TOWNSEND — Fred Hill Materials Inc. will be granted a 690-acre mineral overlay zone near Shine, which clears the way for an application for the controversial “pit-to-pier” gravel project.
Once Jefferson County commissioners finalize the decision on Friday, Fred Hill can begin applying for permits to mine gravel on the additional acreage or develop the four-mile conveyor and 1,100-foot Hood Canal pier that are the centerpieces of the pit-to-pier proposal.
The Fred Hill comprehensive plan amendment and conditions will be firmed at a meeting of the county commissioners on Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St., Port Townsend.
Commissioners voted 2-1 on Monday to update the county’s comprehensive plan to include the overlay zoning.
