PORT TOWNSEND — The annual Jefferson County Hospice Foundation fundraising breakfast drew more than 150 people while raising funds for a new program.
“Our goal this year is adding respite care to relieve weary caregivers,” said Cindy Thayer, chairwoman of the fundraiser at Fort Worden Commons on Thursday.
“Today, we raised over $14,000 towards that end.”
The money will be used to support end-of-life services provided by Jefferson Healthcare Hospice.
“The Hospice Foundation for Jefferson Healthcare has a twofold mission: to raise funds that will assure everyone in hospice care benefits from important hospice services not covered by Medicare and other insurance, and to provide community education about end-of-life planning,” Thayer said.
Hospice care is provided to terminal patients at the end of their lives to make their final days as comfortable as possible.
The foundation holds educational events about hospice and fully funds grief support services, including individual and group counseling; and comfort therapy, a program that offers supplemental pain and symptom management services such as massage, cosmetology, music therapy, Reiki, acupuncture and therapeutic touch.
The Hospice Foundation for Jefferson Healthcare is located at 2500 W. Sims Way, Suite 300.
