PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County commissioners on Monday took the first step toward creating an off-road vehicle area when it agreed to form a focus group to study the idea.
There are no officially designated or authorized areas for off-road vehicles in East Jefferson County.
And county Public Works Director Frank Gifford said areas that have been used informally for off-road activities are disappearing because of property development, growing population and environmental/regulatory concerns.
Commissioner Glen Huntingford, R-Chimacum, had good news for off-road enthusiasts looking for a home.
“The Department of Natural Resources is in interested in finding spots (for off-road uses), and limiting use is some areas,” Huntingford said.
Huntingford also pointed out that it is possible to have the DNR board transfer land to the county for use as an off-road site.
“The question is how to generate revenues to take care of it,” Huntingford said.
No specific proposed location was given.
