Jefferson County commissioners Monday endorsed a plan to combat saltwater intrusion into water wells.
The plan calls for monitoring some wells and allows a moratorium on new well construction as a last resort to fight the fouling of freshwater wells.
The county must have standards to protect against intrusion — a longstanding problem in some shoreline areas — by August, as required by a January ruling of the Western Washington Growth Management Hearings Board.
The new regulations will be sent on to the Planning Commission before going back to commissioners for final approval.
