Jefferson: County nears completion of terrorism response plan

The Jefferson County Department of Emergency Management is nearing completion on a plan that would spell out how local government, police, fire and medical agencies will respond in the event of a major terrorist attack.

The 12-page document which has yet to be released will detail how local agencies coordinate actions with each other and state and federal agencies — including the Federal Bureau of Investigation — in the aftermath of a major terrorist incident.

The plan, discussed at a meeting of the of the Jefferson Peninsula Regional Emergency Planning Committee on Friday, will also provide immunization strategies in the event of disease outbreak in the area as a result of bioterrorism.

“The plan spells out how the different agencies would interrelate and work together,” said Bob Hamlin, coordinator of the Jefferson County Office of Emergency Management. “Jefferson County has a pretty low probability of being a terrorist target, but that’s not to say we shouldn’t be prepared.”

The plan, which was initiated in the weeks following Sept. 11, will supplement a county emergency management plan already in place.
