After years of discussion about how to improve emergency dispatch services in Jefferson County, a new dispatch agency is expected to start Aug. 1.
Jefferson County commissioners approved an agreement Monday to form the new organization — JeffCom.
The organization would handle 9-1-1 calls in Jefferson County as an independent organization.
Currently, dispatch services are under the direction of the county Sheriff’s Office.
“In very short order, we are looking at making major changes,” County Administrator David Goldsmith said.
Proponents have said shifting dispatch and 9-1-1 services to an independent agency will renew focus on a service they said has been underfunded and understaffed within the Sheriff’s Office.
