PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County and Port Townsend city officials and citizens were lauded by Secretary of State Sam Reed on Thursday for their efforts in preserving the area’s rich history.
Reed awarded certificates to groups for their work on the Washington Territory’s 150th anniversary and spoke to local dignitaries and citizens on the steps of the Jefferson County Courthouse.
The county was formed about three months before Washington Territory was carved out of Oregon Territory, Reed said.
And Port Townsend has the interesting distinction to be one of only a few municipalities dating back to that time.
