Jefferson Democrats endorse candidates

CHIMACUM — The Jefferson County Democrats have endorsed Derek Kilmer for Congress, Jay Inslee for governor, Maria Cantwell for U.S. Senate and Barack Obama for president of the United State.

Jefferson County Democrats voted at their monthly meeting at the Tri-Area Center in Chimacum last week and decided on the four Democrats unanimously.

Kilmer of Gig Harbor has announced his candidacy for the 6th Congressional District seat to be vacated by retiring Belfair Democrat Norm Dicks.

Republican Jesse Young of Gig Harbor also has announced candidacy for the position.

The 6th Congressional District includes the North Olympic Peninsula.

Cantwell is a two-term senator from Mountlake Terrace. State Sen. Michael Baumgartner, R-Spokane, who is campaigning to be the Republican nominee to run against her.

Inslee resigned from Congress, where he was in his eighth term representing a Seattle-area district, in March to focus on his race against Republican Rob McKenna, the state’s attorney general.

Gov. Chris Gregoire, a fellow Democrat, is not seeking a third term.

“It’s unusual for the Jefferson County Democrats to endorse so early in a campaign, but because the stakes are so high this year, the membership wanted to make sure that everyone knows we are proud to stand behind Derek Kilmer, Jay Inslee, Maria Cantwell and President Obama,” said Chairwoman Teri Nomura.

In Jefferson County, precinct caucuses will be held countywide Sunday, April 15 at 1 p.m.

A precinct caucus finder application is currently online at www.jeffcodemocrats.com.
