PORT TOWNSEND — A group calling itself Tamanowas Rock LLC meets at noon Friday at Golden Times Photography, 120 Water St., as it continues efforts to purchase about 100 acres near the rock to save it from development.
Jefferson County, Jefferson Land Trust, Native American tribes, All My Relations and other groups are the backbone of Tamanowas Rock LLC. They say they have been working for years to preserve the rock and land around it as a possible wildlife habitat and historical tribal sanctuary.
Tamanowas Rock is on the northwest corner of 60 acres of privately owned land near the eastern border of Anderson Lake State Park.
Kees Kolff, a Port Townsend city councilman and member of the land trust, said the property could be used as the location for 11 homes.
The preservation group needs to secure funding by Sept. 21 to preserve it or have it developed less intensely.
The group must also find buyers for 83-plus acres of commercial forestland on a ridge to the south across Anderson Lake Road.
