PORT TOWNSEND — Tears welled up in Katherine Baril’s eyes as she listened to Cara Leckenby of Port Townsend say how thankful she is she could take college courses without having to move out of Jefferson County.
Baril, faculty chairwoman of the Washington State University Community Learning Center in Port Hadlock, was among nearly 100 people attending a celebration of the Jefferson Education Consortium Tuesday at the Elks Club.
Leckenby’s story affirmed efforts of the consortium — which includes WSU and Baril — to provide college and vocational learning opportunities in county in a unique pilot project.
The consortium includes Peninsula College, Centrum Foundation, Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding, WSU, Port Townsend Marine Science Center, Chapman University, Western Washington University, City University and Old Dominion University.
