Several significant Jefferson County projects are still in the operating and capital budgets of both the state Senate and the House despite the Legislature’s ongoing budget wrangling.
The capital budgets include $7 million for a multipurpose building at Fort Worden State Park to replace the aging restaurant.
The budgets differ, however, in how the project will be funded.
The Senate bill would require that future revenues be used to pay for the construction. The House bill would directly fund the work.
Carol Shiffman, director of the Centrum Foundation which is based at Fort Worden, said she was pleased that the building project was in both budgets, though she believed the Senate funding mechanism was unworkable.
“It’s great news that the project is still alive,” Shiffman said. “We’ve been working on this for three years and this is the best news so far, but we’re not home yet.”
