NORDLAND –Marrowstone Island property owners favor installation of a public water system.
A survey of property owners shows them backing such a project by a 2-to-1 margin.
“It’s a little more favorable than we expected,” said Bill Graham of Public Utility District No. 1. “We’re kind of impressed.”
Residents petitioned the utility district in August to establish a public water system for the island, which has a growing problem of salt water intrusion into its wells. To help with a preliminary engineering study, PUD commissioners sent a survey that asked property owners whether:
* They want their houses hooked up to the system;
* They approve the system but do not want to be hooked up;
* Oppose the system or are undecided.
Of 680 surveys mailed, 244 have been returned. Of those, 137 are in favor of the water system, 46 against and 61 undecided, Graham said.
