Jefferson County commissioners will finalize a mineral overlay for Fred Hill Materials Inc. near Shine 1:30 p.m. meeting today (Friday).
But in doing so, they are not giving Fred Hill permission to go ahead with its plan to build a four-mile conveyor and a 1,100-foot pier on Hood Canal near Thorndyke Bay.
The company didn’t need the overlay, or permission, for its “pit to pier” project.
The Poulsbo-based company could have applied for a permit to build the project at any time without the overlay, Commissioner Glen Huntingford, R-Chimacum, said Thursday.
But by having the mineral overlay, Fred Hill Materials can mine as much as 40 acres at a time, he said.
But that mining comes under more stringent county control than without an overlay.
