Fire district officials in Port Ludlow and Chimacum have begun efforts leading toward an eventual merger of their agencies.
Even before officially announcing the plan last week, Districts No. 3 (Port Ludlow) and No. 1 (Chimacum) were often responding to emergencies together.
“This will save the taxpayers money and create less of a workload on both districts,” Chimacum spokeswoman Denise Manly said.
During the initial stages of consolidation, each district will remain separate and commissioners for each will put together their own budgets.
But the fire chiefs for the districts will begin splitting responsibilities.
