PORT TOWNSEND — Two Port Townsend men were honored Monday for seeing something that needed to be done and doing it.
Dennis Bates, Jefferson County landfill director, is credited with saving a quarter-million dollars of equipment and facilities when a trailer containing solid waste caught fire at the landfill three weeks ago.
“I just did what I thought was needed,” said Bates, who moved the trailer, which was in flames, away from a building.
Todd Hulbert, a 30-year-old construction worker, was honored for his work in rebuilding the skateboard park.
“I just saw what seemed like a need,” Hulbert said. “The old one was pretty dangerous.”
Both Bates and Hulbert are local heroes, having grown up in the area and graduated from Port Townsend High School — Bates in 1969 and Hulbert in 1990.
