PORT TOWNSEND — A plan to build a four-mile conveyor belt and a long pier to transport gravel from the Hood Canal could add money to Jefferson County coffers, the Chamber of Commerce was told Monday.
The proposal by Fred Hill Materials Inc. to create a rock and gravel terminal on the Hood Canal below the Shine Pit won’t cause long-term environmental impacts, a Fred Hill official said.
Project manager Dan Baskins, keynoting Monday’s weekly chamber membership meeting at the Port Townsend Community Center, said the plan to increase operations at Shine Pit by nearly tenfold wouldn’t cause an excessive number of openings of the Hood Canal Bridge, either.
The company wants to build an 1,100-foot pier at the base of a conveyor stretching to the Shine Pit about four miles inland.
