PORT TOWNSEND – Jefferson County commissioners and Port Townsend City Council members said during their first joint meeting in two years they would work to adopt a joint resolution on greenhouse gas emissions.
The resolution will set goals of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050 and establishing a program to monitor energy consumption.
The only formal decision made at the 2½-hour meeting Thursday in City Hall Council Chambers was that the two governing bodies would meet every two months.
“It’s like a first date,” Port Townsend Mayor Mark Welch said of the joint meeting.
“I think this is a great opportunity for the city and county to explore topics of mutual interest.
“We’re here not to solve problems, but to identify, discuss and prioritize.”
The county commissioners plan to sign the climate protection resolution at their May 29 meeting.
