PORT TOWNSEND — Thanking the community, local government and her sister Soroptimists, Nancy Stelow formally dedicated the newly landscaped Soroptimist Park on Thursday.
“We really worked in concert with Jefferson Transit and the city,” Stelow said.
“It became a team effort.”
Stelow was project chairwoman for the makeover of the park, a triangle of land bordering Sims Way at the Kearney Street intersection.
Formerly overgrown with weeds and shrubs, it was adopted in 2003 through a city parks program by members of the women’s service club, who developed a landscaping plan.
On March 12, the women removed all the old vegetation except for a large willow that shelters the ground.
Two weeks later, they brought in new dirt and planted low-growing, drought-tolerant plants that would not obstruct lines of sight for cars or provide places for people to loiter unseen.
“We wanted to make this place safer for women and children,” Stelow said.
